The Tradition of Cuban Pig Roasts & the Caja China
A Cuban pig roast, or lechón asado, is the centerpiece of major celebrations, from holidays to family gatherings. The pig is marinated overnight in mojo—a citrusy, garlicky marinade—and then slow-roasted to perfection.

The caja china (Spanish for "Chinese box") is a uniquely Cuban roasting method that dates back to Chinese laborers in Cuba, who developed a way to trap heat above the pig, ensuring crispy skin while keeping the meat juicy. Today, it's the gold standard for Cuban-style pig roasts!

We look forward to celebrating with you—don’t miss out on this unforgettable event!

Afterparty at Gramps Hideaway!
Keep the party going with us after the roast! Join us at Gramps Hideaway for drinks and more fun!

Who Gets In and Why: Inside the New World of College Admissions

Who Gets In and Why: Inside the New World of College Admissions

Join Shalini Uppu, Yale College alum and former college admissions director, to learn how admissions practices have changed over the last 15 years. We'll cover how the most selective colleges review applications and how students can prepare now. Shalini will share insights on what distinguishes the most successful applicants in a highly competitive process.

Jonathan Kim, Yale Club of South Florida president, will moderate a Q&A session for families. At the end of this event, students will leave with tools and strategies to elevate their applications and have a little fun in the process.

We invite the Yale Club community, especially any of our families with high school students in grades 9-12 as those students and families will benefit most from this program.

About Shalini:

Shalini grew up in Miami and attended Miami Palmetto Senior High. While at Yale, she worked in the admissions office as a student tour guide, panelist, and senior interviewer. She went on to a professional career in admissions and served in some of the most elite undergraduate and graduate admissions offices in the country, including Duke and UChicago. She has personally reviewed thousands of applications, interviewed hundreds of applicants, and chaired admissions committees with final decision-making authority. Shalini returned home to Miami and co-founded an admissions process consultancy to support students and families through a complex, but rewarding, college admissions process.

Getting There and While There:

We strongly encourage using rideshare to get to the venue as parking is often limited in this area. Seating at this venue may also be limited for this event.

Where: Elena Bulatova Fine Art Gallery, 919 Collins Ave. Ste B, Miami Beach, FL 33139

2024 Yale Day of Service!

About Yale Day of Service

Yale Day of Service is the university’s annual celebration of service, with Yalies banding together each year to give back to their local communities. In all, alumni communities host close to 300 service projects each year. We estimate that at least 3,500 service initiatives have taken place in the program’s history, dating back to its inception in 2008.

What began more than a decade ago as a single day has now grown into an ongoing call to action for service activities that span the globe, in sectors from environmental clean-ups to educational webinars, legal clinics to house painting.

Now more than ever, every day can be a Yale day of service. How will YOU make a difference this year?

The Yale Club of South Florida and Books & Books are thrilled to present an evening with Carmine Vittoria for his fascinating book.

Join us for this exciting discussion and indulge in some snacks and drinks!

About the Book:

Have you ever wondered what life was like for those caught in the crossfire of warring armies during WWII?

Step back in time to Southern Italy during WWII and discover the hidden secrets that have been buried for decades. In "Hidden in Plain Sight," physicist and historian Carmine Vittoria weaves a gripping tale of survival and resilience, shining a light on the plight of Jewish internees and townspeople caught in the crossfire of warring armies.

Through his vivid storytelling, Vittoria transports readers to a time and place where survival was uncertain, and every day brought new challenges. Despite the turmoil and chaos of war, a special kind of empathetic connection emerged between these two communities. Their lives became entangled in unexpected ways, forging a more realistic and humane view of history in these small towns of Southern Italy.

"Hidden in Plain Sight" is a must-read for anyone who loves historical fact/fiction that is both informative and engaging. Vittoria's unique academic background and being there adds a layer of depth, feeling, and authenticity to the story that will leave readers captivated from start to finish.

A Private Art Reception for Art Basel Miami Beach

Private Art Reception for Art Basel Miami Beach Week

Tuesday, December 5

6 to 8 PM
David Castillo Gallery
3930 NE 2nd Avenue, Suite 201, Miami, FL 33137
$40 per person

As the art world takes over Miami for Art Basel Miami Beach in December, we'll be gathering our community of Yale alumni and parents at the prestigious David Castillo Gallery.  Join us for wine, art & hors d'oeuvres!

David Castillo is a Yale alum (BA ‘96, Branford) and will offer remarks on his career journey from his undergraduate studies in New Haven to opening his eponymous gallery in Miami.

Learn more about David Castillo Gallery via his website, or via features in Artnews (2023) and The New York Times (2018).

On view will be Impressions, a solo exhibition of new works on silk by Chinese-born painter, Su Su. These new works employ a technique of the artist's own invention, wherein oil paint is injected using a needle through the backside of the image. Oil paint serves as both medium and methodology in these works, facilitating metamorphic figurative paintings that navigate the intersections of cultural memory, canonical legacies and representations of femininity.

Space is Limited - Register Today

PS - Can’t make the reception? Be sure to say hello at David Castillo Gallery’s booth located at B47 at Art Basel Miami Beach, which will be exhibiting works by two Yalies: Vaughn Spann (Yale School of Art MFA, Painting and Printmaking, Class of 2018) and Nadir Souirgi (Yale School of Art MFA, Painting and Printmaking, Class of 2024)
